[...he's going to take that to mean "no, I'm not busy."]
I need to learn how to fight...at least enough to be able to defend myself. I need some help picking a weapon as well. I've never used one before so I don't know what would even suit me or be easy to use...
[Oh. That... wasn't really what she expected him to ask, but considering she's not entirely sure what she did expect, it's fine.]
I don't mind. It's a good idea. I could at least teach you the basics of defense and how to disarm someone.
As for weapons... Probably something with a long reach, to give you more control and level the field between yourself and someone stronger. Something like a spear or even a naginata. I'm not sure if they have those here though, so maybe something like a quarterstaff.
Or even more ideally, something ranged. Bows and arrows. A crossbow. That sort of thing. [Crossbow feels a little odd to offer though, she's not sure how she feels about it after...everything, but. It'd still be useful for him.]
Thank you, Harukawa-san! We can just make it a part of our regular training.
[There's a little bit of a pause before he addresses the weapon thing. While he doesn't remember the crossbow incident himself, he's heard about it since coming here. And he's a little unsure about that suggestion as well. Mostly because he's not sure if it'll make Maki and Kokichi uncomfortable.]
Would it bother you if I used a crossbow? That would be easier to learn than an actual bow and arrow, wouldn't it? And I'm guessing guns probably aren't an option...
[Though the moonbase itself is sci-fi, everything else is high fantasy...]
That's right, we should start that up again soon. [There had been A Lot happening, so she hadn't thought too much about picking that back up again, but it's a good idea--and a little comforting that Shuichi wants to pick it up again too.
She lets out a slow breath at Shuichi's question though and closes her eyes, shaking her head as if to shake away the bitter feelings that twist in her stomach.]
It's not about my comfort. You should use something that you could actually wield. I haven't seen any guns here, except for one man who has one. But I think it came with him from his world.
You'd be best fighting for a distance, so anything that would give you the upper hand there would be ideal. Don't worry about me.
I...haven't been keeping up with it since we got here. But that mission to find the Director was...a disaster, at least for me. It made me realize that neglecting training and not adapting it to life here was...a mistake.
[He's a little ashamed to admit it. Because there hasn't been quite AS much going on for him as there has been for Maki. He's just been busy researching and studying and...doing other things. He's pretty sure Kaito would be disappointed in him.]
Okay, well...I'll still look into guns first. Just in case.
[She says it doesn't matter to her but it matters to him because she's his friend and he doesn't want her to be even MORE potentially sad when they do their training. The fifth trial may not have happened for him but...he DOES remember a certain evening where she taught a different boy how to assemble and use a crossbow...]
I haven't really either. A lot has been happening, but we should get back into the routine.
[She pauses, deciding not to comment more on the crossbow. It's going to be a sore subject and she's dropped weapons for less (looking at you, swords), but... She takes a breath. She'll have to get over it, to help Shuichi wit this.]
Did you... want Akamatsu to join too? [She doesn't bother asking about Kokichi, but she's not sure if Shuichi might want to bring Kaede in at least.]
[SORRY KAEDE. IT's not even a thing against her, specifically; Maki had accepted everyone else joining in after the last trial and all, but being thrown into this weird new place? She'd like to keep it to just the two of them for a bit.
And it'd be nice to have something just for them.]
At least not right away, but I wanted the decision to be up to you. I want it to just be us for a little bit until we get more comfortable with this place and everything that's come with it. ["Everything" being things like Kaede and Kokichi.]
[Shuichi can't help but chuckle fondly a little bit when he reads her response. He can practically hear the immediate, point blank tone in her voice.]
Sounds like we're on the same page then. When should we start training again? I think it would be best to keep doing it at night, so we don't have to worry about planning around anything.
True. Though there seem to be more night owls here than there were at the Academy. Just something I've noticed. But even so, I don't think we need to worry about other people that much. There's a dojo here after all, it's pretty normal for people to train for fighting. I don't think anyone who came across us would think anything of it or bother us.
But I'm guessing this means you don't want to make use of that particular facility though?

I need a favor, but it can wait if now isn't a good time.
